Job Objective

Under the general direction of the Director, Legal Services, the Paralegal Officer is responsible for providing administrative and legal support to Director, Legal Services who is responsible for managing the OIC’s legal portfolio by creating and maintaining support systems and processes which assist the work of the Officers in the OIC.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the drafting and preparation of legal documents, under the guidance of the Director;

  • Liaises with external clients;

  • Ensures retention schedules for legal documents/files relating all legal matters are strictly adhered to and files are stored securely and easily retrievable; 

  • Serves as liaison with other GOJ entities: 

  • Conducts research into legislation and other sources of law as directed; 

  • Assists in organising meetings to review and discuss legal committee documents; 

  • Assists in collating documents in preparation for legal consultations; 

  • Provides information to stakeholders and other parties subject to maintaining confidentiality and/or upon the instructions of the Director of Legal Services where necessary; 

  • Processes general inquiries and requests as directed; 

  • Maintains the files and records in a confidential, secure and reliable manner in accordance with established records management principles to ensure expeditious retrieval of files.

    •    Legal documents drafted in accordance with established standards and timeframes;
    •    Legal research is evidence-based and completed in agreed timeframes;
    •    Queries/information requests processed in agreed standards and timeframes;
    •    Correspondence prepared in the agreed format, standards and timeframes;
    •    Reports prepared are comprehensive, in the required format and timeframes;
    •    Files and records maintained in keeping with best practices and agreed timeframes;
    •    Meetings organized based on agreed standards and timeframes;
    •    Individual Work Plans developed in conformity to established standards and within agreed
    •    timeframes;
    •    Confidentiality, integrity and professionalism displayed in the delivery of duties and
    •    interaction with staff.

Minimum Required Qualification and Experience
  • Certificate/Diploma qualification in Legal or Paralegal Studies; and training
  • Minimum Five (5) CSEC subjects including English Language; 
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a law office or legal environment. \
